The Visiting Artist, Scholar, and Designer Program at RMCAD is pleased to present Micah White, our second visitor and lecturer in the Program’s “Interventions” series.

About the lecturer:
Micah White is a former editor of Adbusters magazine and co-created the international meme Occupy Wall Street. Influenced by philosophical ideas, political and cultural movements, environmentalism, and technological innovations, White inspires seemingly minor contributors to harness the power of information systems and participate in the creation and direction of culture.

About the lecture:
White’s lecture “The Future of Protest” will explore how visual culture plays an important role in social change through critically evaluating activist events like Occupy Wall Street. White will speak to the innovative position of artists and designers in the current environment of cultural and political civic engagement. White calls for creative re-imagination of how we relate to the world and others. This is particularly urgent because of the growing alarm of climate change and the increasing frustration of political stalemate.

About the VASD Program “Interventions” series:
The VASD Program explores the concept of “Interventions” in a series of public lectures from September 2013 through April 2014. The series began with London-based artist Daniel Eatock and initiated the examination of the various possibilities and manifestations of interventions in the cultural realm, as well as how they function in the current art and design discourse. Interventions rupture systems or generate moments of directional change offering an occasion for reflection and opportunities to transform the construct of the world around us. Historically, art and design interventions have run concurrently and sometimes led new ways of seeing the world.

About the VASD Program:
The VASD Program is an interdisciplinary initiative that is culturally inclusive, intellectually expansive, and ultimately enriches RMCAD and the larger Denver community. An integral part of the educational mission of RMCAD, the VASD Program fosters vision, creativity and innovation by bringing leading national and international artists, scholars and designers to campus each year. The Program provides direct access to contemporary art, design and culture through an inspiring comparative framework, creating a forum for diverse and challenging artistic visions. The VASD Program creates a cross-disciplinary environment made possible through appreciation and critical inquiry.
