California College of the Arts is pleased to announce the 2013–14 lineup of its new Four by Four Lecture Series. The series brings to campus major interdisciplinary practitioners/thinkers working in contemporary fields of relevance to CCA’s students and the broader Bay Area community. The speakers will present their latest work and research.
Each year there will be four lectures, two in the fall and two in the spring, each hosted by one of the four different academic divisions at CCA (Fine Arts, Design, Architecture, and Humanities and Sciences).
For its inaugural year, the series has a special focus on the intersection of science with art and design. The lecturers offer perspectives on how technology, ecology, and other sciences influence the visual arts, as well as how creative practices can be central to advancing scientific discovery.

Jennifer Gabrys

Jennifer Gabrys is a senior lecturer in sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London, and a principal investigator on the European Research Council (ERC) project Citizen Sensing and Environmental Practice, which investigates the use of environmental sensors for new modes of citizen involvement in environmental issues. Her 2011 book Digital Rubbish: A Natural History of Electronics examines the materialities of electronic waste.
Ariel Waldman

Ariel Waldman is the founder of Spacehack.org, a directory of ways to participate in space exploration, and the global instigator of Science Hack Day, an event that brings together scientists, technologists, designers, and people with good ideas to see what they can create in one weekend. Previously, she worked at NASA’s CoLab program, whose mission was to connect communities inside and outside NASA. She has also been a sci-fi movie gadget columnist for Engadget and a digital anthropologist at the marketing agency VML.
Natalie Jeremijenko

Natalie Jeremijenko is an artist and engineer with a background in biochemistry, physics, neuroscience, and precision engineering. She calls herself a “thingker” and describes her work as experimental design, exploring the opportunities new technologies present for nonviolent social change. She is currently an associate professor at New York University in the visual art department, and has affiliated faculty appointments in computer science and environmental studies.
Camille Utterback

Camille Utterback is an internationally acclaimed artist whose interactive installations and reactive sculptures engage participants in a dynamic process of kinesthetic discovery and play.
Her work explores the aesthetic and experiential possibilities of linking computational systems to human movement and gesture in layered—and often humorous—ways. Her work has been exhibited at galleries, festivals, and museums internationally.

Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) offers 22 undergraduate and 12 graduate programs in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and writing.
