In partnership with The Charlotte Square Collection, Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) is seeking to appoint an artist in residence with substantial experience and interest in location-specific projects, to work with and lead students on project(s) inspired by Edinburgh’s Charlotte Square.

For the first time since its conception in 1767, the majority of Charlotte Square is now being managed as an estate where a new sense of custodianship seeks to return the Square back to its premier status as a prestigious commercial centre in the city, by bringing modern building technologies within the context of Grade A listed buildings whose stunning interiors can be sensitively restored and preserved.

The artist in residence will, in discussion with ECA and representatives of The Charlotte Square Collection, define the scope and format of the project(s) and work to an agreed set of deadlines for a range of events throughout the 11-month residency.

As well as collaborating with groups of ECA students, the Artist in Residence will also work with the Art Collections Curator and ECA Archivist to document the projects, developing ideas around the ‘archival process’ and the permanency of the projects themselves—making a tangible connection to the work being carried out on Charlotte Square.

The artist in residence will have access to a ‘laboratory’ space in Charlotte Square, where both the groups involved and The Charlotte Square Collection can demonstrate the activity of the residency to the project’s various audiences.

The stipend for the residency will be 15,000 GBP with an additional 5,000 GBP available towards costs for materials, exhibition, presentations and events.

The residency has an expected start date of 1 October 2013 and will run until the end of August 2014.  Around two to three days a month of collective enquiry would be expected of artist and students, depending on the nature of the project(s), culminating in an exhibition and/or event to coincide with the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Deadline for applications: 5pm, Monday 9 September 2013
