The master programmes at AKV|St.Joost support artists and designers in their ambition to deepen and strengthen their practice through research, projects, experimentation and presentations. The programme provides students with an enhanced foundation for a lifelong career.
The master programmes have a strong international orientation: students come from the Netherlands and abroad, and the programmes have established collaborations with other master programmes and art and design institutions abroad. The students are all professionals who want to expand their vision and artistic possibilities.
The students own projects and personal research questions are leading in the programme, the taught programme supports these developmental aims. Students will learn how to position themselves on a conceptual level in the international professional field. Students are coached by experienced and renowned (guest) teachers. The courses collaborate wherever possible within joint modules and activities to stimulate exchange of views and debate.
Fine Art
The Master of Fine Art concentrates on the less self-evident aspects of being an artist. Students share a joint studio at the academy as a starting point. In the joint taught programme we endeavor to investigate art and the artistic calling as a non-homogenous field of cultural practices. The curriculum emphasizes extra-disciplinary thinking, offers theoretical frameworks, and stimulates a reflective, critical attitude in relation to the art world and the personal oeuvre.
Photography
Point of departure in the master programme Photography is the documentary discourse and the relationship photography has with reality. The documentary concept, which is an essential element of photography, is one of the main subjects of debate and research in the programme. The focus is on new forms of photography in the relatively autonomous contexts of the photo book, the exhibition, the moving image or the internet project.
Graphic design
The Graphic Design master takes an academic approach to Graphic Design, objectifying the considerations of the design process and making all instances thereof subject of argumentation. This will result into better reasoning and subsequently higher standards of the work.
The course takes graphic design to a higher level through methodology of research-founded argumentation.
Animation
The Animation programme is a one-year course that focuses on the broad role of animation within the context of media, art, design, games and science. From this orientation on new contexts and application ranges of animation, students will be able to specialize individually, based on a clear insight into their own ambitions and possibilities.
