The Master Artistic Research (MAR) is a two-year interdisciplinary programme for students working in the field of visual art and/or music.
In recent years, artists, musicians and designers have shifted their attention to the discursive aspects of the practice of art and to its cognitive functions. Do artists produce knowledge? If so, what kind of knowledge? How does art’s knowledge relate to other kinds of knowledge? These are just some of the questions that underpin the recognition of artistic research as a specific activity. All of them prompt ways of rethinking the relationship between the arts and other fields and between art and life itself.
Artists working in the field of artistic research are taught to develop a heightened self-reflexivity about their artistic practice, to explicitly position their practice in relation to wider artistic and non-artistic discourses and to expand their knowledge bases into areas that fall outside of the realms of art discourse, but are relevant to their individual artistic practice. The Master Artistic Research seeks to extend students’ ability to gather relevant material, to undertake close reading, listening and looking, to locate and understand connections within and across material and to make informed judgments about the value and relevance of ideas from sources external to their practice. They learn to use insights gained through reflection to improve their artistic work. The result of the research is, in the first place, an artistic product in the broadest sense of the word.
A collaborative programme between an art academy and a music conservatory, the Master Artistic Research facilitates particular opportunities for artists engaging in performance art, sound or music. Students have access to all of the conservatory facilities, as well as being able to select courses of interest and engage in interdisciplinary platforms. In 2013–14 this will extend into dance and circus arts in conjunction with CodArts, Rotterdam. Students of the MAR may also attend selected courses at the University of Leiden, as well as the PhD arts doctorate in art and design.
The Master Artistic Research is a full-time programme offering:
•Regular individual studio visits, tutorials and group classes with practice and theory tutors
•Participation in specialised artistic research groups in which students cluster around shared areas of interest with the support of relevant guests
•Excursions, theoretical seminars, guest workshops, studio visits and lectures
•Participation in internal and external exhibitions, performance events, symposia and festivals
•A working space and access to all of the general facilities of the Royal Academy of Art and the Royal Conservatoire, as well as access to selected courses at Leiden University.
See our Marchive publication, downloadable at www.masterartisticresearch.eu for an overview of the full programme.
