Call for applications for artists’ residency & mentoring programme

Deadline for application: 24 May 2013

Artists from Baltic States, Cyprus and Malta eligible

The European Investment Bank (EIB) Institute is pleased to announce a mentoring programme/artist’s residency, with the inaugural cycle targeting visual artists (aged <35) from the Baltic States, Malta and Cyprus.

The successful applicant will be mentored by acclaimed Polish artist Mirosław Bałka, whose works are included in the collections of the MoMA (New York), Tate Modern (London), Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), etc.

The EIB Institute aims to highlight/pay tribute to the extraordinary pool of creative talent in Europe. For the first edition of its mentoring programme, it will exclusively focus on artists with an Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta or Cyprus nationality or domiciled in either of these countries.

Initiated by the EIB Institute, the Artists’ Development Programme aims to catalyse artistic innovation and promote artists by associating an established artist with an emerging artist from the same discipline. The main practical objective of the programme is to help bring about the production of an innovative artistic project.

The artists’ residency provides an outstanding opportunity for the emerging visual artist to develop her/his practice at the highest level, while being mentored by a leading peer.

The residency is open to all individuals wishing to develop their practice in a professional context by creating a new (body of) work(s). Applicants should be under 35 years of age at the time of application, in keeping with the EIB Institute’s focus on promoting young or emerging talent. Applicants must have the nationality of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Malta or Cyprus or reside in one of these countries. In order to facilitate communications with the mentor and local artistic environment in Luxembourg, participants should be fluent in English.

Applications are evaluated by a selection jury consisting of members of the EIB Institute Arts Committee and external arts professionals. The jury bases their selection on the artistic quality of the applicant’s historical work, the proposal submitted, the potential impact of the residency on the applicant’s career, and the relevance of the applicant’s practice to the cultural context of the EIB Institute.

Budget and duration
The EIB Institute will take over the artist’s travel costs to and from Luxembourg. The artist in residence will also receive a stipend (EUR 100 per day). At the end of the residency, the participant will receive an artist fee of EUR 1,500.

The duration of the residency is four–six weeks. The artist participating in the Artists’ Development Programme will be provided a living/working space located in Centre Culturel de Rencontre Abbaye de Neumünster, situated in the culturally rich Grund district of Luxembourg city. Upon completion of the residency, the EIB might consider acquiring an artwork from the artist.

Application procedure
CV (in English)
–Scanned copy of the passport or identity card of the applicant
–A letter of motivation/intent specifying personal drive and expectations for the programme together with a concept for the project proposed for the residency (maximum 500 words, in English)
–Portfolio of visual documentation of several works, best characterising the art of the applicant
–Names and contacts of two professional referees, familiar with the art of the applicant

Selection procedure
A jury will select the candidate for the residency to be held in September–October 2013 based on the quality of his/her work, and the applicant’s potential to use the residency to maximum benefit.

The selected candidate will be informed of the jury’s result via email by the end of June 2013.
