The M.A. Art and Curatorial Practices in the Public Sphere program at the USC Roski School of Fine Arts is accepting applications for the 2013–14 class on a space-available basis.
The M.A. Art and Curatorial Practices in the Public Sphere is an intensive Master’s-level course in the practice and history of art, curating and critical theory. Over two years of study, students explore cultural production, writing, and programming in a curriculum that combines seminar and practicum formats, intimate guest lectures, and cross-disciplinary opportunities within a leading research university.
Seminars are taught by curators, art historians, artists, and critics whose work with leading institutions and publications provides critical insight to students as they pursue research and manifest their second-year exhibitions and individual Master’s Theses. This year’s faculty is Rhea Anastas, M.A. Director (art historian and co-founder of Orchard); Connie Butler (Chief Curator of Drawings at MoMA); Bruce Hainley (writer, curator); Karen Moss (curator, art historian); Carol A. Stakenas (Executive Director, LACE); A.L. Steiner (artist and member of Chicks on Speed, founder of W.A.G.E.); John Tain (curator, Getty Research Institute) and Noura Wedell (scholar, translator, editor for Semiotext(e)).
A Curatorial Practicum allows each student cohort to realize an original exhibition. The 2012 practicum Radio-Break consisted of radio transmissions and live performances throughout Los Angeles. 2013’s Between Bodies is a group exhibition in downtown Los Angeles featuring Ghana Think Tank, Adrian Piper and rarely exhibited work by Artur Barrio and Juan Downey, among others.
The USC Roski Graduate Lecture Series brings approximately 30 lecturers to campus each year. Guests remain on campus for extended discussions with graduate students in Roski’s M.A. together with MFA students in Fine Arts during the spring semester. Upcoming lectures include Frédérique Bergholtz,Josephine Pryde, David Joselit, Sharon Hayes, Tania Bruguera, Charles Ray, and Lucy Lippard.
USC offers a bold structure for interdisciplinary focus. A dual MA/MPL cross-registers students with the USC Price School of Public Policy for a dual degree in urban planning. USC Thornton School of Music offers courses in Arts Leadership. USC Cinematic Arts hosts the innovative Institute for Multimedia Literacy (IML), offering graduate coursework in radical and scholarly uses of digital media: interactive, social, and mobile design and theory—open to all Master’s and doctoral programs at USC.
The city of Los Angeles is home to a wide array of artists and of resources and practices in art, architecture and the urban sphere including museums, galleries, nonprofit spaces, publishers and research institutes.
