About the MA Art & Politics
The Department of Politics at internationally renowned Goldsmiths, University of London is accepting applications for its new MA in Art and Politics.
At the heart of cultural politics today is a new range of issues, such as the global ‘war on terror’; rising levels of ethnic, religious and civic conflict; issues of human rights and humanitarian intervention; concerns about environmental degradation and the global effects of financial turmoil.
In such a climate, questions about the ‘autonomy’ and the ‘politicality’ of Art are being posed. What is Art’s role in times of political and cultural crisis? Does ‘committed’ or ‘political art’ merely aestheticise and trivialise that which can never be communicated?
The MA in Art and Politics provides students with the opportunity to explore these, and many more, issues and practices in a genuinely interdisciplinary setting. Working from a strong theoretical basis, the programme aims to better understand a range of empirical, aesthetic and conceptual issues which traverse and exceed both ‘Art’ and ‘International Politics.’
Students will study core courses, including a group project and 10,000-word dissertation, as well choosing from a range of options from within the Department or from approved options in other Departments. One year full-time and two year part-time study options are available.

Skills and careers
Students will develop a critical engagement with the broad field of international studies, as well as effective communication, research and presentation skills. Our graduates come from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and embark on highly contrasting career paths. These include careers in curating and art practice, journalism, performing arts, central and local government, work with NGOs, research, project development, administration and management. Our fees for UK and EU students are 5250 USD one year full time study, 16200 USD for international students.
