Grants
Some 90 grants, usually covering tuition costs only, are available for participation in one of the courses at the Summer Academy. Only grants by the American Austrian Foundation (AAF), ERSTE Foundation, Free State of Bavaria, and Münster Academy of Fine Arts offer additional subsidies for travel and living costs.

About the Summer Academy Programme
The 2013 programme is diverse and multifaceted, ranging from stone sculpture to media art, from “arte útil” (useful art) to jewellery design and on to curatorial practice. The focus is on exploration, defining and interpreting the terrain where art is produced, presented and communicated—as well as on the inevitable disillusionment that occasionally arises, and the subsequent re-enchantment. Students will be given assistance in discovering their own artistic cosmos and creating scope for development. The 21 courses of between one and four weeks are held in three locations: Hohensalzburg Fortress, the old salt factory (Alte Saline) in Hallein and the Kiefer quarry in Fürstenbrunn.
Highlights
Figuration or abstraction? The painter Norbert Bisky takes students into the field of tension between the two. The contrast between precise reproduction and free expression is seen here as a valuable extension of the possibilities offered by painting. In his painting course, Hubert Scheibl,whois presenting a solo exhibition in the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art from 20 July until 20 October 2013,will examine how popular media such as film and music can influence painting. Photographer Katharina Sieverdingreturns, and a photography course is also offered by Paolo Woods, who works as a documentary photographer in various conflict regions (currently Haiti) forTime, Newsweek, Le Monde, Geoand other international publications, and has also enjoyed success in numerous exhibitions. His course is devoted to the question of how photography can tell stories. The Russian artistOlga Chernyshevais known for her lyrical investigations of individuality within a society in upheaval. Her course focuses on working out one’s own artistic landscape, which may be expressed in a variety of media.Robert Kuśmirowski—generally called a “genius of fake”—meticulously replicates entire situations, rooms or landscapes. His students will use specified materials and situations to work out new sculptural perspectives. Christoph Draeger takeseveryday objects as the basic materials for his course. By means of collages and assemblages, the students will explore how the meaning of these objects can be altered when they are placed in different contexts. In her workshop, Tania Brugueraconcentrates on the question of what actual social and political effects can be achieved through art.
Further artists and curators are Nancy Adajania, Shaina Anand/Ashok Sukumaran, Sarnath Banerjee, Leya Mira Brander, Charlotte Cullinan, Milena Dragicevic, Bassam El Baroni, Felix Gmelin, Hanspeter Hofmann, Thomas Kilpper, Mara Mattuschka, Lucy Sarneel, and Schälling|Enderle.
Regular application
The high quality of the courses is guaranteed by the requirement that all prospective participants must apply for acceptance. On the basis of the submitted dossier, the teachers select participants. The fees are between EUR 430 and 1,120, depending on the duration of the course. Students are entitled to a reduced fee. Closing date for applications for courses is 15 May 2013. If numbers allow, later applications may be considered.
