Curating Contemporary Art Upcoming exhibition and event programme

Curating Contemporary Art (CCA) facilitates research on all aspects of curating from exhibition history to translocal issues of curating to a critical engagement with curating as a profession, a discipline or even a way of looking at the world. CCA is lead by art historian, critic and exhibition maker Ruth Noack.

This spring, to mark the 20th anniversary of its first student-curated exhibition in 1993, CCA is running an exciting and provocative programme of exhibitions and events at the College and elsewhere in London including:

No one lives here
8–24 March (private view 7 March, 6:30pm)
This year’s Graduate Exhibition explores aspects of the digital age, from the domestic to the political, that permeate contemporary life in a contradictory way.

The over-saturation and remediation of images through social media, open source databanks and citizen journalism has contextually altered the individual and social rules of engagement. Students take up Gayatri Spivak’s assertion that “the globe is on our computers. No one lives there” (Death of a Discipline, 2005) and bring together sculpture, installation, moving image and performance, taking on a virtual environment that is uninhabitable yet populated.

Not Dressed for Conquering – Ines Doujak’s Loomshuttles/Warpaths
14–21 March (opening: 13 March, 6–8:30pm; performance 7pm)
Austrian artist Ines Doujak’s two-year research into the textile culture of the Andes has resulted in an eccentric archive, presented here in her UK debut. Doujak’s critique of ethnographic exhibitions and belief of the role of the artist as an agent of change leads her to ask: “How can textiles take on another life in the world of display?”

Curated by Ruth Noack with CCA students, the exhibition is part of MeLa* European Museums in an age of migrations, funded by the European Commission under the Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities Program (FP7th). CCA is a research leader within MeLa* for the RCA.

Ines Doujak’s research is funded by the Austrian Science Funds (PEEK) AR 19-G21 and hosted by IWM, Vienna. Additional funding by BMUKK, Austria and ACF, London.

How to do Research with Art?
14 March (3–5pm)
Ines Doujak’s eccentric archive a point of departure, May Adadol Ingawanij, Susanne Leeb, Francesco Manacorda, Bartomeu Marí, Ulrich Schötker, and Ruth Noack discuss questions of artistic research. The MeLa* event opens with a conversation between Claire Pajaczkowska and John Barker, researcher for Loomshuttles/Warpaths. Additional funding by ACF, London.

Engaging in a work by Ines Doujak – a critic’s perspective
21 March (7pm)
Public talk given by Ruth Noack, hosted at the Austrian Cultural Forum, London.

Panel discussion on curating for different socio-political and artistic points of view, hosted at the Goethe-Institut London.

Unity in Difference
15 March (7–8:30pm)
Film programme curated by Florian Wuest, followed by a conversation with Ruth Noack  and the launch of ‘The Europa Triangle’ by Kit Hammonds.
