The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Transmedia. The Transmedia program is part of the Studio Art division in the Department of Art and Art History. The Department of Art and Art History is comprised of four divisions: Design, Art History, Visual Art Studies and Studio Art. The University of Texas at Austin is a flagship Tier One research institution, situated in a city known for its quality of life and active engagement with the arts.

Transmediais an interdisciplinary field of study focused on a combination of technical and conceptual skills, preparing students for the development of a time-based art utilizing the tools and strategies of video, performance, and digital or interactive art that are articulated in the studio, the public sphere, and other contexts. By nature, Transmedia represents hybrid strategies and resists conventional disciplinary nomenclature. For this reason, we are seeking applicants who bring a wide range of practice that could include, but is not limited to, video, performance, interactive or new applications of technology.

Applicants must have an active exhibition record nationally or internationally or comparable achievements in their area of expertise. An MFA or equivalent is required. Prior teaching experience preferred. Applicants should be versed in art history, critical theory and time-based art production tools. Computer-based interactive skills and other technical knowledge desirable. The Assistant Professor in Transmedia will work closely with his/her colleagues in the studio area and with the department chair to develop new curricular initiatives, participate in governance, and other service critical to the mission of the department.

Teaching will be at all levels, from undergraduate to graduate courses, with a typical faculty load of 2/2 based on an active research schedule. Service to the community of the department in addition to official college and university business is required. As a Tier One research institution, the University of Texas at Austin expects this faculty member to actively pursue original research with a mandate to significantly contribute to their field through publication, exhibition, performance, or other venues central to their discipline. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Applications should include a statement of interest, current curriculum vitae, the names of three professional references (with phone and email contact information), and documentation of teaching and research history. Please organize the documentation within a single PDF file and email to [email protected]. For moving image files, or other media that aren’t easily accommodated by this format, please embed links within the PDF. Review of applications will begin February 11 and continue until the position is filled.
