Tulane University’s Newcomb Art Department offers a MFA degree in a small-sized, intensive, interdisciplinary, two-year residency program that emphasizes close interaction with faculty and peers and engagement with the city’s unique cultural landscape. Degree requirements focus on studio work but include four MFA seminar classes and two graduate-level courses in the history of art. All admitted students receive a financial aid package that consists of a full tuition waiver and a yearly stipend of 14,984 USD to perform instructional duties and maintain their respective studios.
Graduate students are provided with a private studio and 24-hour access to world-class facilities in the Woldenberg Art Center. Ceramics includes general studio workrooms as well as large clay, glaze and plaster mixing rooms, kiln room and outside firing area. Digital Arts studio is equipped with Mac stations, scanners and printers. Glass houses both a hot and cold shop. Painting and drawing maintains four rooms with full walls of natural north light and color-balanced lighting. Photography includes both black-and-white darkrooms and new digital imaging facilities. Printmaking has facilities for intaglio, lithography, relief and silkscreen as well as its own darkroom. Sculpture houses an extensive metal foundry and wood shop. Additionally, the 1,600 square-foot Carroll Gallery is dedicated to student and faculty exhibitions, providing opportunities for showing new student work in addition to regular thesis exhibitions. The 3,500 square foot Newcomb Art Gallery features museum-quality exhibitions of contemporary and historic visual art on a year-round basis.
Tenured studio faculty include: Teresa Cole, Ronna S. Harris, Kevin H. Jones, Jeremy Jernegan, and Gene Koss with Professors of Practice Aaron Collier, William DePauw, Stephen Durow, Frederick Lineberger, Adam Mysock and visiting faculty AnnieLaurie Erickson and Srdjan Loncar.
Recent visiting artists and critics include: Tanyth Berkeley, Dan Cameron, John F. Clark, Holland Cotter, Paul Chan, Mel Chin, Luke DuBois, Eve Fowler, Katy Grannan, Dana Hoey, Susan Kismaric, Miranda Lash, Nicola Lopez, Lothar Osterburg, Eric Parker, Alexis Rockman, Jeff L. Rosenheim, Thomas Roma, Jennifer Steinkamp, Pat Steir, Robert Storr, Swoon, Marcia Vetrocq, Pawel Wojtasik, and Lisa Yuskavage.
The Newcomb Art Department is accepting applications this year in Ceramics, Digital Arts, Glass, Painting, and Printmaking. Please specify your primary discipline. The application deadline is February 1, 2013. Please note that the GRE is not required of MFA applicants in studio art. You may complete almost all of the steps for the application process online.

Images should be of recent pieces and they should indicate your primary interest and direction. The studio art faculty reviews all applications by the first week of March and makes recommendations to the School of Liberal Arts on candidates to accept.
