First International Arts Management Master’s Degree Program to Launch in Fall 2013

Dallas, Montréal, Milan … HEC Montréal, SDA Bocconi School of Management and SMU are partners in a new degree that approaches arts management from a global perspective.

The universities are launching a new 12-month International Arts Management Master of Management Degree (M.M.) beginning in fall 2013.

The degree will be the first to focus on issues unique to international arts management. The program includes one four-month session at each of the three partner universities and will prepare students to manage and lead international arts and cultural organizations.

Coursework will focus on cultural policy, international law and the arts, cultural economics and the international art market, arts marketing, urban planning and cultural tourism, the international digital media market, and the strategy and governance of cultural organizations, as well as other areas of arts management.

“As arts and cultural industries grow increasingly interconnected and global in scope, our new M.M. degree responds to the heightened demand for a graduate program specializing in international arts management,” says Dr. Zannie Voss, chair of the Division of Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship at SMU.

The three partner universities are each widely recognized for their existing programs in arts and cultural management, which combine standard management courses with courses addressing the unique challenges of leading arts organizations. It brings together more than 50 full-time faculty members with expertise in arts management from all three universities.

“The new M.M. will give students access to an unparalleled pool of resources to create a foundation for their careers on the international cultural market,” says Professor François Colbert, holder of the Carmelle and Rémi Marcoux Chair in Arts Management, HEC Montréal.

“There is no better way to learn to be an international arts manager than to be immersed in a variety of cultures,” said Stefano Baia Curioni, Associate Professor, Department of Policy Analysis and Public Management at Bocconi University. “In the future, arts managers will be dealing with more international challenges. This new degree is the only program in the world that specifically trains students to address these multicultural issues.”
