Known for novels chronicling American life, including The Ice Storm (1994), The Diviners (2005), and The Four Fingers of Death (2010), Moody is also deeply involved in music. In his recent collection of essays, On Celestial Music: And Other Adventures in Listening (2012), Moody expresses his passion for music from Otis Redding to Meredith Monk. Established in 1987 in honor of the Phillips’s founder, Duncan Phillips Lectures present distinguished artists, historians, and critics speaking on a broad range of aesthetic concerns. Moody is the keynote speaker of the International Forum Weekend in Washington.

Roundtable Discussion

This informal conversation among creative personalities addresses the increasingly interdisciplinary character of contemporary art as it incorporates image, sound, and music. It pays tribute to both the 71-year history of music at The Phillips Collection and the 100th anniversary of John Cage. Director of the Phillips’s Center for the Study of Modern Art and Curator at Large Klaus Ottmann moderates an international panel of artists, musicians, and writers, including sound artist and composer Alvin Lucier, visual artist Jesper Just, visual artist and musician Ragnar Kjartansson, writer and musician Rick Moody, and visual artist Xavier Veilhan. 20 USD; 8 USD for members; FREE for students. Artist’s Perspective

The French artist discusses his artwork in the context of his exhibition (IN)balance, on view at The Phillips Collection Nov. 3, 2012–Feb. 10, 2013. The most ambitious project to date in the museum’s Intersections contemporary art series, (IN)balance features 18 recent pieces in several media that reflect a balance between natural and social forces, new technologies and historical styles. Veilhan has worked closely with musicians throughout his career, including his ongoing collaboration with the French band AIR and 2008 film Furtivo starring and scored by Sébastien Tellier. Included in museum admission.
