In the spring of 2012, Parsons Fine Arts will host Mexican artist José Antonio Vega-Macotela as its Intermedia Artist in Residence and will also present a conference entitled “Art Practice, Activism, and Pedagogy: Some Feminist Views.” These special programs are central to Parsons Fine Arts’ mission to offer interdisciplinary activities that integrate art and theory.
José Antonio Vega-Macotela’s month long visit to Parsons School of Art Media and Technology begins on March 21st with a public lecture in Kellen Auditorium at 6:15pm. His residency has been made possible by a gift from The Daniel and Estrellita Brodsky Family Foundation.
One of the most prominent members of a new generation of aesthetically iconoclastic and socially engaged Mexican artists, Vega-Macotela’s work is currently featured in The New Museum’s Triennial “The Ungovernables,” and was included in the 2010 Sao Paolo Biennial. He is best known for his long-term project entitled “Time Exchange” involving inmates at the Santa Martha Acatila Prison in Mexico City. During his residency, Vega-Macotela will visit classes and develop a collaborative project with students in Fine Arts, Photography and Design Technology.
“Art Practice, Activism, and Pedagogy: Some Feminist Views,” will be held on Thursday April 5, 2012, from 9AM to 5PM at the Theresa Lang Student Center. The conference takes place within the context of Mira Schor’s graduate course on Feminist Art. The event will consider feminist art as a multidisciplinary activity that incorporates a radical critique of gendered power relations. The women artists participating will speak about their history within feminism, and the relevance of feminist identification and communities to their creative endeavors.They will discuss what it means to be a feminist artist today in relation to various forms of political engagement. Speakers include Susan Bee, A. K. Burns, Audrey Chan, Maureen Connor, Caitlin Rueter & Suzanne Stroebe and Ulrike Müller.
