The Advanced Course in Visual Arts (CSAV) is dedicated to young artists from all over the world. Created and directed by Annie Ratti since 1995, it is curated by Andrea Lissoni and coordinated by Angela Maderna. The course is conceived as an experimental lab for art and theory guided by an artist who, each year, shares his or her thinking and artistic practice with the participants.
The 18th edition of the CSAV titled Are We Really Free? will take place from 2–25 July 2012 and Liliana Moro will be Visiting Professor. The workshop will approach the concepts of freedom and sharing spaces, thoughts and actions.
Living a common experience together means sharing a space and a time, but above all it means negotiating with others one’s thoughts and daily actions.
Public space is constructed through dialogue and “doing things together.”
Public space/time is nothing more than thinking about what we do.

A jury will select the 20 participating young artists from the presented portfolios. The participants of the workshop will be involved in daily activities dedicated both to the reflection and to the practice of the artistic activity. During the course, seminars and public lectures will serve to deepen and extend the theme of the course. The first one with Liliana Moro is planned for 5 July and on 12 July, Arto Lindsay will hold a lecture titled “Proud Beggars.”
The Foundation will produce the solo show of the invited artist, Liliana Moro, (opening 5 July) and will give the young artists the opportunity to exhibit their works during Corso Aperto on 19 July.
The workshop is free. Accommodation and travel expenses are not covered. An open call, published on the web site of the Antonio Ratti Foundation (www.fondazioneratti.org), will include the application form. Applications must be received by 30 March 2012.
Liliana Moro was born in 1961 in Milan, where she lives and works. In 1989 she founded, with other artists, the Spazio di Via Lazzaro Palazzi in Milan, active until 1993. Encountering the works of Liliana Moro we get the impression that only what is strictly necessary is present. Sounds, words, sculptures, objects and performance create a world that “stages” a reality simultaneously raw and poetic. These are territories of an individual experience (that of the artist, but primarily that of the viewer) that asks to be taken beyond what is visible. The reduction to the essential understood as an attitude, a practice and a positioning does not result from a recollection of a minimal language: it is rather something that the artist triggers when choosing to use elaborate techniques and when working with existent materials and objects of everyday use. Liliana Moro has participated in major international group exhibitions including Documenta IX, Kassel (1992); Aperto XLV Venice Biennale (1993); Castello di Rivoli, Turin (1994); Quadriennale, Rome (1996/2008); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (1998); PS1, New York (1999); De Appel, Amsterdam (1999), and Bienal de Valencia (2001); Italics, Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2008); Focus on Contemporary Italian Art, Mambo, Bologna (2008); Save Venice, Magazzini del Sale (2009), and Celebration, Institution, Critique, Galleria Civica di Trento (2009). Recently, Liliana Moro has exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles (2008), and Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan (2008).
