About the Doctoral position (PhD in Visual Art)
Kungl. Konsthögskolan|Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm is offering a doctoral position which is open for artistic, architectural and curatorial practices.

To undertake a doctoral study at the Royal Institute of Art means to develop an artistic research project of high quality, which will be publicly presented, and to also engage in a pedagogic context. The purpose is to develop individual understanding, explore artistic means and tools, and through an innovative research project offer new knowledge and insights within the artistic field. The research process should be critically and contextually reflected upon and documented in a relevant presentation format.

The Royal Institute of Art is looking for a PhD candidate who is prepared to embark on something new, which will challenge or renegotiate an existing practice. The person selected will become a co-creator in the continuous development of the research environment at the Royal Institute of Art.

About the doctoral programme and employment
The programme comprises of 240 ECTS-credits, which equals four years of full-time studies and leads to the award “Doctor of Philosophy in Visual Art.” This is a Swedish doctoral award where emphasis is put on artistic practice and where the candidate is examined on a “documented artistic research project.”

The doctoral programme includes compulsory semester meetings and workshops, elective modules, and the independently run documented artistic research project.

Two supervisors will be identified in dialogue with the PhD candidate; the main supervisor will be a professor based at the Royal Institute of Art, while the second supervisor is external to the institution. A work space and access to technical workshops are offered at the Royal Institute of Art’s premises on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm.

The advertised doctoral position is financed through a doctoral studentship (approx. 21 500 SEK per month). The PhD candidate is appointed for one year at a time. If the studies proceed at the expected rate, and depending on the agreed teaching percentage, an annual re-appointment will be made for a maximum period of 5 years.

The doctoral programme is offered through Konstnärliga forskarskolan, a national research school in the field of arts. This means that the PhD candidate will be employed by the Royal Institute of Art while formally registered at Lund University which acts as the host institution.

With a history dating back to 1735, the Royal Institute of Art is one of the oldest and most influential higher education art institutes in Europe. Over the years many BA and MA graduates have gone on to pursue highly successful international careers as artists. There are also one-year professional development programmes for professional artists. Mejan Arc, a forum for architectural and urban studies, offers one-year postgraduate courses in Architecture, Architectural Conservation, and Art & Architecture.

Key concepts in the work at the Royal Institute of Art are experimentation, critical reflection and independent artistic development. The supervising professors have prominent international profiles as artists, architects and theoreticians. Workshop teaching is led by artists who run courses in a wide variety of techniques such as printmaking, painting, sculpture, video, sound, photography and interactive technologies.

Within the framework of the Royal Institute of Art, teaching staff and students at the advanced level, have for many years undertaken shorter artistic research projects. Since a few years the institute is developing its activities around artistic research with employed PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers. There is also a new initiative, Mejan Residents, where artistic practitioners undertake artistic research projects during one academic year.

The Royal Institute of Art is situated in central Stockholm, which is home to a very dynamic and international art scene.
