About the Programs

Master of Arts in Media Studies

The New School’s innovative Master of Arts in Media Studies allows you to integrate studies in media history, theory, research, and management with production work in film, audio, video, and digital media—so you can advance in almost any area of this wide-ranging field.

Media studies graduates use their degrees to enhance their current careers or build new ones in a broad spectrum of fields such as marketing, public relations, non-profit management, film, design, and academics.

Flexibility and interdisciplinary study are among the key benefits of this program. The MA online option allows you to complete your degree on your own schedule from anywhere.

Graduate Certificate in Documentary Media Studies

Produce, direct, and edit an original documentary, guided by a faculty of professionals, in the graduate-level Documentary Media Studies certificate program.

The one-year, full-time graduate certificate program in Documentary Media Studies offers you an opportunity to study documentary history, theory, and practice. By the end of the program you’ll have produced, directed, and edited an original documentary, guided by a faculty of professionals.

Graduates will be qualified to enter documentary professions through a variety of routes—documentary director/producer, documentary television business, theatrical distribution business, work with film festivals, film magazines or museums‹or to continue graduate school in pursuit of an MA and/or PhD in Media, Anthropology, Film Studies, or related field.

Students who complete the Certificate in Documentary Media Studies have the opportunity to apply those credits to The New School’s MA program in Media Studies.
