The Program
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Art soon will begin its selection of incoming MFA graduate students. Through our thorough and careful process we are able to maintain a top-notch graduate program with a one to one student faculty ratio; a ratio that allows for sustained rigorous exchange with a core faculty who are leading artists and scholars in their fields. UNC-Chapel Hill’s graduate program is an intense two-year program focusing on the professional development of studio artists that fosters conceptual rigor and formal innovation. We support the development of practical and critical skills across diverse media and disciplines. Students are provided large studios and financial support, enabling plentiful space and time to explore, challenge, and refine creative practices. All students have access to the Department’s state of the art labs, which collectively encourage our students to realize their ideas in whatever direction they deem most appropriate. Teaching fellowships allow each student to gain classroom experience and close mentorship by faculty fosters professional academic growth.
The studio art MFA program at UNC-Chapel Hill is a site of synthesis, where ideas from any discipline can find their way into artistic practice. The program gives students the flexibility to take a wide range of courses throughout the university. MFA students routinely cross disciplinary boundaries and take advantage of faculty, specialists and facilities both within the department and across the University. Last year, for example, MFA students worked within the Department of Physics researching laser optics, and in the Department of Applied Mathematics on liquid magnetics. At UNC, creative and cross-interdisciplinary research is embraced and valued knowing the creative innovation that comes with making art. Through close collaboration with our top-ranked Art History program, and with individual studio visits from visiting artists, scholars, and critics students engage in critical discourse, broadening the theoretical, conceptual, and historical scope of their practice.

Awards:
The M.F.A. Program at UNC has produced students who have won 3 Joan Mitchell Grants, 3 International Sculpture Center Awards, a Jacob J. Javits Fellowship and a Dedalus Foundation Fellowship. Former graduates have taught, or are teaching at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, City College of New York, Syracuse University, University of Colorado, Virginia Commonwealth University, Florida State University, Clemson University, Howard University, University of Virginia, SUNY Plattsburgh, University of Oregon, and the Kansas City Art Institute, among others.
