Processuality and performativity, and more recently even dramaturgy and choreography, are often mentioned in analyses of exhibitions and other artistic and curatorial formats. Still, space remains the main category of reference, the temporal dimension of exhibiting has yet to be researched in any depth. This is all the more surprising if one considers that current discussion on the subject focuses in particular on the ways exhibition practice has changed over the past 20 years in the wider context of cultural and economic globalization—a context closely linked to notions of acceleration, processuality, action orientation and mobility. In this light, the exhibition appears as a trans-disciplinary and trans-cultural space, as a public and social sphere. It manifests itself as a set of spatio-temporal relations, a medium that is already time-based by its very nature: as a form of presentation that is of a specified duration and as an event bringing together different actors—from the exhibits to the artists and curators through to the audience and the institution. It is clear, then, that key aesthetic, social and economic issues of the early 21st century run through the field framed by the axes of exhibiting and the temporal. In this light, the conference “TIMING. On the Temporal Dimension of Exhibiting” aims to examine the cultural and societalimplications, potential and prospects of the specific aspectsof exhibiting that are shaped by time—the processes,rhythms, and dynamics involved with art and culturebecoming public.
