The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) Fashion, Body & Garment graduate program seeks to provide a creative and intellectual context in which the nature and potential of fashion is closely examined and reimagined. The program’s interdisciplinary approach allows for limitless opportunities to engage in a vibrant environment of contemporary art making and scholarship, forming connections between fashion and other artistic practices.
Merging explorations in studio and immersion in theory, the Master of Design in Fashion, Body & Garment curriculum includes design studios, topical seminars, self-directed research, technical labs, design history and theory courses, and a wide range of elective options, including courses in performance, film, new media, writing, and sculpture.
SAIC’s Fashion faculty is composed of renowned artists, designers, design historians, and professionals in the field. Fashion Department Chair Nick Cave was one of the first American artists to receive a United States Artists Fellowship, his world-famous Soundsuits have been featured in Vogue, and his work is exhibited nationally and internationally. Fashion alumni include such notable designers as Matthew Ames, Gary Graham, Halston, Eunwha Kim, Morgan Puett, Cynthia Rowley, and Lawrence Steele.
SAIC’s Fashion program is located in the historic Sullivan Center. The newly renovated SAGE Studios for Fashion Design house 200 dress forms, 60 industrial machines, 10 sergers, two skiving machines, two blind stitch machines, a pearl edger, a button hold, a shoe machine lab, graduate studios, and a state-of-the-art computer lab.
Other resources include the collection at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Fashion Resource Center, a hands-on fashion study collection featuring designer garments and an extensive visual and print collection.
