Please join us in welcoming Jessica Stockholder to the University of Chicago, as she assumes her new role as Chair of the Department of Visual Arts. The artist, whose work has brought about a sea change in our shared understanding of what sculpture can be, will reflect on how her work and its place in the world.
Winning international acclaim for her genre-defying multi-media installation pieces, which incorporate found objects and painting in bold, vibrant colors, she has received numerous awards, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship as well as the Smithsonian’s Lucelia Artist Award for exceptional American artists under 50. Her work has also been shown at the Dia Center for the Arts, the Whitney Museum for American Art, Museum of Modern Art PS1, the Venice Biennale, the Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. In 1991, the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago exhibited Stockholder’s installation, “Skin Toned Garden Mapping.”
Stockholder joins the University after serving as chair of the Program in Sculpture at Yale University, where she taught from 1999 to 2011.
