The Interdisciplinary Arts Program at Goddard College presents Making, Meaning & Context: A Radical Reconsideration of Art’s Work, a forum for practitioners and scholars across the artistic disciplines to reexamine the function of art and artists in today’s world. Featuring as keynote the internationally acclaimed theatre director, playwright, and video installation artist Ping Chong, the conference will bring together over 60 presenters for three days of performances, installations, roundtable conversations, workshops, and presentations exploring the following questions: At this time in history, what does it mean to pursue an “art practice” or identify as an “artist?” How has “art’s work” evolved in support of or in resistance to a culture of commodification and consumption? What is the potential for art to create civic sites for public discourse and expression? What are the ways in which art might be complicit in upholding contested narratives, including those of modernism and capitalism? How might interdisciplinary practice contribute research and knowledge production that will support daily lives, diverse ecosystems, and the expansive realm of human imagination?
The conference runs from Friday, October 14 through Sunday, October 16 at Goddard College in Plainfield, VT. Housing and meals are available on campus. For more information or to register, please visit artswork.goddard.edu or e-mail [email protected].
