The List Visual Arts Center, MIT’s contemporary art museum, enjoys a long-term reputation for presenting experimental and intelligent exhibitions, which are accompanied by a wide range of educational programs and publications.  The Director will provide the vision and administrative leadership for the List Visual Arts Center, building upon its international reputation for cutting-edge exhibitions and embracing opportunities for programming that takes advantage of MIT’s role as the world’s leading research institution in science, engineering, technology and new media.  The successful candidate will be an accessible, dynamic advocate for the most innovative contemporary art, as well as an enthusiastic fundraiser and relationship builder who will represent the List’s interests to a broad range of stakeholders internally and externally.

Reporting to the Associate Provost responsible for the arts, the Director will ensure that the List’s mission is fulfilled and that its strategic objectives are fully articulated and attained. Working in close partnership with the staff, the Director will define the scope and direction of exhibition programming and educational initiatives, will build awareness of the List through effective branding and judicious marketing and communications efforts, and foster collaborations within MIT. The Director also will be responsible for the overall financial and operational health of the List, including annual and long-term budgets, fundraising, marketing, and enhancing and implementing its strategic plan.  He or she will embrace the often demanding social schedule of a cultural leader, becoming a visible presence on campus, in Cambridge and in the greater Boston arts community, while enthusiastically cultivating new and existing donors, Advisory Committee members, Friends and community partners.
