The Department of Media Study at the University at Buffalo is renowned for its pioneering contributions to film, video and sound art practices and theory. Today, Media Study adds to these existing strengths conceptual and computational media with a diversity very few art departments can match.

Candidates accepted in Media Study ‘s Graduate program work together with artists, thinkers and theorists whose work and research deliver formative contributions to current practices and discourses in media arts. Furthermore, Media Study maintains vibrant exchanges with many other departments across UB, the flagship institution in the State University of New York, including Anthropology, Architecture, Visual Studies, Geography, Comparative Literature, Music and Theatre+Dance. International ties with world-class institutions such as the Bauhaus Universität Weimar offer students the chance of adding research abroad to their portfolio of activities. Additionally, we offer computing resources and expertise not typically found in arts programs allowing students to engage computational systems such as locative media on a deeper level. All students receive access to studio space and state of the art equipment commensurate with experimental media practices.

The PhD in Media Study seeks to nurture the next generation of artist-scholars and assist them as they map new art and research practices of the 21st century. Students develop under faculty supervision their research specialties and engage the university community to formulate deep individualized research trajectories in cutting edge media theory and practice.

The MFA in media arts allows students from various backgrounds to create a refined, sophisticated and individualized artistic practice in every form of media. Focus areas include film and video, documentary, game design, digital poetics, locative media, public computational media.

The MFA/MArch in media arts and architecture allows qualified students to immerse themselves in media arts practices, including computational media that engage architectural and urban space, such as urban computing, locative media and ambient informatics.

The MAH in film studies is an interdisciplinary degree which enables students to study cinema in the context of media theory and cultural studies. Participants take core courses in the Department of Media Study and choose electives from other departments according to their individual focus.

Buffalo and Western New York offer a vibrant art scene with a high density of museums and galleries, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, CEPA Gallery, Big Orbit, Soundlab, Hallwalls, and Squeeky Wheel. If you are an independent, creative, critical and self-motivated artist with a vision, Media Study at the University of Buffalo is the right place for you.
