MFA in Visual Art

The graduate program prepares students to incite progressive social change, address challenges in the environment, and assume their roles as global citizens through avenues such as study abroad programs and public engagement opportunities.

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis is a unique collaboration in interdisciplinary architecture, art, and design education, linking professional studio programs with a university art museum in the context of an internationally recognized research university.

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, part of the Sam Fox School, is home to one of the finest university collections of important paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installation by 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century American and European artists, along with significant antiquities and a large number of prints and drawings. Earl E. and Myrtle E. Walker Hall houses a state-of-the-art facility for material manipulation and individual studios. Bixby and Steinberg Halls, both recently renovated, include studio spaces, and faculty and administrative offices. The Lewis Center, located approximately one mile from the University’s Danforth Campus, is home to the MFA program and houses studio space, metal and wood workshops, and a printmaking studio.

Washington University, a medium-sized, independent university, is dedicated to challenging its faculty and students alike to seek new knowledge and greater understanding of an ever-changing, multicultural world. The University is counted among the world’s leaders in teaching and research, and draws students and faculty to St. Louis from all 50 states and more than 110 nations. The University is highly regarded for its commitment to excellence in learning. The University does not discriminate in access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or disability. Present Department of Defense policy governing ROTC and AFROTC programs discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation; such discrimination is inconsistent with Washington University policy.
