The VISUAL STUDIES Department at UB invites applicants to study alongside internationally renowned scholars and visiting artists in the vibrant Western New York art scene, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, CEPA Gallery, Big Orbit and Soundlab, Hallwalls, Just Buffalo Literary Center, Squeeky Wheel, and the Western New York Book Arts Center. UB is the flagship institution in the State University of New York’s 64-Campus system and supports the University Art Galleries on two campuses. With its vibrant arts scene, low cost of living, and extensive park system, Buffalo is ranked the “top Mid-Sized City arts destination in the U.S.” (AmericanStyle Magazine readers poll) and the “#2 best place to relocate” (BestPlaces.net).

critiques visual culture and visuality in diverse forms such as art, design, rich media, science and technology. Concentrations within the MFA are self-defining and flexible, supported by the diverse range of research interests and skills of internationally renowned faculty, visiting artists, designers and critics. All MFA students are given secure studios with 24-7 access. Shared labs include photography (digital, b/w, non-silver), video/ sound recording and editing, print media (lithography, intaglio, screen, digital, relief and letterpress), sculpture, casting (foundry), installation, performance, communication design and electronics/physical computing.The MA PROGRAM engages study of art history while embracing a discursive approach to the field of Visual Studies. It is a space where historians, theorists and curators are compelled to engage multiple visual platforms and environments beyond the traditional discourse of art and art history. A Specialization (Certificate) in Museum Studies can be earned simultaneously to the M.A. degree.
