Systems of Sustainability: Art ⋅ Innovation⋅ Action
Symposium
March 27 – 29, 2009
Part arts festival, part academic symposium, S.O.S. looks at creative enterprise as an integral tool for cultural growth and social change. Experience a range of events that showcase innovative practices from local, national, and international participants including prominent artists, researchers, activists, and scholars. Events include site-specific projects, participatory activities, lectures, scholarly panels, and many opportunities for dialogue.

Why S.O.S.?
Media outlets, political figures, and retailers alike proclaim that today’s most complex global challenges can be addressed with a single word: sustainability. The sustainability movement attempts to combat some of the biggest and most fearsome problems worldwide—global warming, natural, economic and political disruptions, and social discord—and as a result permeates our everyday life.

The performing, visual, and literary arts can be highly effective in posing solutions to our biggest global challenges. S.O.S. invites you join a list of world-renowned speakers and participants in the ever-more pressing conversation about what it means to sustain our planet, our culture, and our creative enterprise.

Systems of Sustainability is presented by the University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston. S.O.S. is developed in close consultation with Dr. Robert Harriss, President of the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) and Liz Lerman, founder of the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts cultivates interdisciplinary collaboration in the performing, visual, and literary arts. From our base at the University of Houston, we offer public events, residencies, and courses that fuse artistic disciplines, ignite dialogue, and present new ways of experiencing the arts in contemporary life. The Mitchell Center was founded with a 20 USD million grant from George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell, and forms an alliance among five units at the University of Houston: The School of Art, Creative Writing Program, Moores School of Music, School of Theatre and Dance, and Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston.
