Our MFA degree program is an intense two-year creative study of moving image video, focusing individually on art, documentary, fiction and non-fiction, single channel and installation projects. Our students and faculty are an active part of the extraordinary cultural, artistic and media environment of New York City.

The course of study, select and personalized, includes all aspects of the lens-based arts including: investigation of language, texts, sound, narrative, form and production. Our practices are varied, from documentary real world witness to narrative and conceptual and fine art practices. Our students, diverse and international, bring with them unique talents that have allowed them as graduates to flourish as documentarians, exhibiting artists, directors, and teachers.

The program began in 1992 and has evolved into a dedicated track and curriculum integrated within the photography and media curriculum for a small select group of students. As tools for production throughout the past decade have been in a state of continuous and significant development, it has been our mission to be an innovator in the use of video in all its applications in twenty-first century culture. This demands of our faculty and students the deep investigation of the content of our work from a practical, aesthetic and intellectual point of view.

Our core program faculty includes: Grahame Weinbren, film, video, installation artist, editor of Millennium Film Journal; Shelly Silver, documentary, narrative, experimental, installation artist; Mary Patierno, film and video producer, editor; Amy Taubin, critic for Film Comment, Art Forum, Sight and Sound; and Ed Bowes, writer/director of long form narratives and Director of the program. Additional faculty include: Amresh Sinha, film and media theorist; Christina Yang, curator and educator; and Steve Jablonsky, motion graphic artist.

In addition to the faculty, thesis students work with an external thesis advisor. Artists and critics visit the department regularly as a part of our on-going Colloquia and Workshop series. In the past few years these artists have included:

Vito Acconci, Peggy Ahwesh, Michael Almereyda, Laurie Anderson, Cory Archangel, Sally Berger, Alan Berliner, Paul Chan, Abigail Child, Sue De Beer, Su Friedrich, Tom Kalin, Miranda July, Mary Lucier, Matt McCormick, Avi Morabi, Brian Palmer, San Pollard, Jennifer Reeves, Racheal Reichman, Gary Sharfin, Michael Smith, Caspar Staacke, and Julie Talen.

Applications for Fall 2009 are due January 15, 2009. For information about the program and to learn about opportunities to visit the department, please visit http://mfaphotovideo.sva.edu or contact us at [email protected]
