HENRY L. AND NATALIE E. FREUND TEACHING FELLOWSHIP
Position: Each fellowship is open to an artist who will visit twice during an academic year. Visits typically take place from mid-October to mid-November in the fall semester and mid-March to mid-April in the spring semester. Artists will work with students three days a week; have a one-person exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum; and deliver one public lecture at the College of Art or Saint Louis Art Museum. An MFA or equivalent and a significant record of exhibitions and/or publications is required. Teaching experience is desirable. Preference will be given to candidates possessing knowledge and interest in historical and contemporary art issues across disciplines.
The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts offers rigorous art and architecture education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels within the context of an independent, nationally prominent research university. The Saint Louis Art Museum is the region’s major encyclopedic art museum. In addition to substantive collections of African, Oceanic, pre-Columbian, Ancient, Islamic, Asian, American, and European art, as well as strong holdings in Decorative Arts and Design and Prints, Drawings and Photographs, the Museum has an excellent collection of Modern and Contemporary art. SLAM has a stellar 20th-century art collection, with particular strength in German art, including the most significant collection of Beckmann paintings in the world, as well German Expressionism and major works by contemporary artists including Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Anselm Kiefer. Recent Freund Fellows exhibited at the Museum include Ellen Gallagher, Matthew Buckingham, Cameron Martin, Angelina Gualdoni, and Sarah Oppenheimer.
Compensation: Each fellow will receive a 6,500 USD honorarium per visit in addition to housing and transportation.
