Emily Carr University of Art and Design invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice-President, Academic & Provost. After many years of valuable contribution, the current incumbent is retiring in 2009.
Located in beautiful and culturally vibrant Vancouver, British Columbia, ECU’s main campus is on Granville Island, an award-winning site of urban renewal. Emily Carr is a world renowned learning community in art, design and media and currently attracts a culturally diverse student body of approximately 1600 students from across Canada, the Pacific Rim and around the world to its three Bachelor’s degree programs and its Master’s degree program. Emily Carr offers a wide range of studio programs grounded in a strong academic curriculum and with a significant focus on interdisciplinarity, community collaborations and sustainability. The recent granting of university status recognizes the calibre and rigour that have distinguished Emily Carr in its 83 year history.
The Vice-President, Academic & Provost role will provide leadership to the Emily Carr community as it transitions through this significant change. Reporting to the President, the VP, Academic & Provost leads academic strategic planning, policy development, curriculum delivery and regular curriculum review initiatives for the University, ensuring program excellence, innovation and leadership. This position is also responsible for representing the University and promoting its interests and development to external bodies and the wider community.
The ideal candidate will have vision and passion for excellence and innovation as demonstrated by a strong record of teaching, research, academic and creative achievement in the art, design or media field. The candidate will have a solid understanding of the studio/academic interplay critical to artistic practice. An earned doctorate and a minimum of ten years’ teaching experience at the post-secondary level are required. The candidate must have a demonstrated record of ethical, fair and innovative leadership with the ability to foster a sense of community and to inspire students, faculty and administrators to excellence in teaching, research and community service. Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills are essential as well as superior skills in administration.
