In the series of ‘Biennials in Dialogue’ conferences the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) Germany in cooperation with Goethe- Institute has initiated a new two-days conference aiming to generate discussion in the context of international biennial culture. Following earlier conferences in Kassel (2000), Frankfurt (2002) and Singapore (2006) a new group of biennial experts from various parts of the world is invited to convene in Shanghai during the opening days of the next Shanghai Biennial entitled ‘Translocalmotion’, curated by Zhang Qing (CN), Henk Slager (NL), and Julian Heynen (D).

Three main issues will be discussed:
Sustainability What are the various short and long term effects of biennials in hosting cities? What experiences and lessons can we share? Internationalism versus Regionalism Analysis of the local – global aspects present in most contemporary art biennials: democratization of the international art world or a homogenization of cultural expression? Cultural education The interrelationship between international and local audiences? What is the impact of the international on the local and vice versa?

With the conference ifa and Goethe-Institute aim to produce new knowledge, useful for all professionals working in the biennial world as well as the wider general public interested in relevant issues in the context of an ongoing global biennialisation process.
