Digital Media is a new teaching and research group working between the School of Arts & Cultures and Culture Lab. The new Masters of Research in Digital Media is a cutting edge Masters programme, bringing the research excellence of Newcastle University to postgraduate teaching and learning in the field. It builds on the interdisciplinary, practice-led creative research at the University’s Culture Lab (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/culturelab/) centre for interdisciplinary research.
The course is designed to give artists, musicians, architects, film-makers, programmers and technologists the opportunity to expand their practice through creative and socio-cultural applications of technology. Modules in the largely project based Masters will cover foundational digital media techniques, mobile media development, interactive storytelling, designing for ecology and user experience. As well, the course offers optional modules through the departments of Fine Art, Architecture, English (Film) and Music. A part-time scheme is also offered, allowing professionals already working in the creative industries to pursue study.
The degree programme director is Atau Tanaka, Chair of Digital Media, who brings his international profile in media art practice and prior industry research experience at Sony to Newcastle. Lecturer Areti Galani, formerly of the EQUATOR IRC combines human-computer interaction studies of user experience with digital cultural heritage. They are joined by new Lecturer of Digital Media, Jamie Allen, a multimedia artist and designer with years of experience working with international organisations devoted to the synthesis of technology and the arts.
