Programs:
Art and Communication: Marion von Osten
Design and Context: Martin Beck
Fashions and Styles: Elke Gaugele

In October 2008 the Academy of fine Arts Vienna will implement new and innovative curriculums in the field of Art Education. The specific programs offered are Art and Communication, Design and Context, Fashions and Styles. The curriculums are defined by a particular integration of cultural production, education, and theoretical reflection. A degree from the Institute qualifies for teaching in secondary schools; in addition, these interdisciplinary programs qualify graduates for professions beyond the school context: from adult education in the fields of arts and culture to independent forms of practice in the areas of art and design.

The programs’ focus is directed towards those skills that define contemporary cultural and artistic agency: making of art and culture refers to an aesthetic practice that encompasses art but is not limited to it; theoretical reflection refers to the development of a critical voice in relation to one’s practice, guided by an understanding of cultural and artistic agency as a dimension of social contexts and the ability to embed agency into those contexts; education refers to a communicative principle defined by a variety of formats and addressees – ranging from the didactic to technologies of display.

Located in a recently renovated building in close vicinity to the MuseumsQuartier, the Institute for Education in the Arts is equipped with an ideal combination of classrooms, workshops, and laboratories supporting the tight integration of discursive and practical activities. Professors and lecturers with an international reputation in the fields of art, design and architecture, cultural studies and art education make up the faculty imparting the curriculum contents on the highest level.
