This show is selling out – and it hasn’t even opened.

WHAT IS DEMOCRACY IS AMERICA?
WE’RE SELLING YOU THE CHANCE TO CREATE A SHOW.

“Democracy In America” is a two-part performative experiment co-presented by Performance Space 122 and The Foundry Theatre.

• PART ONE: Decide what you’d like to see and experience on stage at Performance Space 122 and send us your request via http://www.buydemocracy.com or peruse some of our suggestions in the online store. Buy whatever you can imagine and we’ll put it on stage. Read below for gift ideas, commercial and artistic opportunities and more – and see what some people have already bought.

• PART TWO: Annie Dorsen (Director of Broadway’s PASSING STRANGE) collects your purchases and creates a live theatre event out of everything that’s been submitted (and only everything that’s been submitted). DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA will be performed by Tony Torn, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Philippa Kaye, and makes its world premiere from April 1st – 20th at NYC’s legendary performance hub Performance Space 122.

IDEAS FOR SALE:
Don’t just propose to your sweetheart: DO IT ONSTAGE.
Advertising Galore: Buy the floor and paste your logo all over it! Buy 10 minutes of performance time and do a sneak preview of your own show!
Election-addicts: Bid on a spot and do some stumping.

Other shopping opportunities include:
Shameless self promotion (actors: this is your chance for a walk-on; artists, hang a painting on the wall – or paint the stage and sign it; writers, insert your own dialogue); and more… Lovelorn poetry reading, outbursts of random maniacal laughter, competitive tea drinking, audience hand-holding, battle reenactment, public spanking, memorial services, spontaneous choreography, silence, sweet revenge on an enemy, pet tricks, alternative endings, a blackout.

(Out of town? Not a problem – find out how much a live video feed goes for.)

SOME RECENT PURCHASES…

NORMAN’S PURCHASE – THE FOLLOWING TEXT WILL BE PERFORMED:
“In 1931 Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said: ‘If there is any principle of the Constitution that more imperatively call for attachment than any other it is the principle of free thought – – not free thought for those who agree with us but freedom for the thought we hate.’”

BILL BOUGHT A SAD SONG TO BE PERFORMED LIVE EACH NIGHT:
He requested the style of Bollywood, the theme of “the illusion of genius,” and a very, very sad
minor key.

GREGORY’S PURCHASE – THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE SHOW:
A stuffed animal (in the shape of a dead dog or the like) filled with tapioca pudding will drop from the sky and explode across the stage. A video clip of Greg’s face shouting “YEAH!” will accompany a slo-motion replay of the pudding drop.

BEN BOUGHT THIS LINE OF DIALOGUE:
“The love I have for my newborn daughter is unlike anything I’ve ever felt in my life!”
