Dancing with a Philosopher: Movement, Embodiment and Mediation
(Edinburgh College of Art) and
Peacemaking in the World of Documentary Film
(The University of Edinburgh)
Applications are invited for two eca/University of Edinburgh funded PhD studentships to students from any country. The projects are designed to encourage collaboration between the two institutions and place them at the forefront of new and emerging areas of research across the boundaries of
traditional disciplines.
Project 1: Dancing with a Philosopher: Movement, Embodiment and Mediation (based at eca)
The goal of this study is to examine how the use of new technologies can advance research in the area of embodied cognition, through providing tools, conditions and practical procedures for an interdisciplinary dialogue between contemporary dance practice and investigations in philosophy of mind. The hope is that by casting doubt on the value of the old distinctions between mind and material scaffolding, and between perception, cognition, and action, we can open up a new space for understanding performance, mind and movement.
Project 2: Peacemaking in the World of Documentary Film (based at The University
of Edinburgh)
The goal of this study is to investigate specific aspects of peacemaking in the world of documentary film. You will reflect and respond to the practice of peacemaking both through creative documentary filmmaking and analytical writing. Applicants should be able to demonstrate both filmmaking and writing skills by submitting a sample of a finished film and completed essay along with
their application.
Candidates should have or expect to gain a 2i or 1st class honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject. The studentships are for three years (starting October 2008) and include tuition fees at the home rate and a standard annual stipend at the AHRC level.
