Since 2004 the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (MaHKU) has been the sole master program in the Netherlands to offer a one-year, interdisciplinary graduation course in artistic research. Through an intensive seminar program with artists, designers, architects, curators, and theorists, two main research themes are addressed. Departing from the question of intermediality, the department of MA Fine Art focuses on the position of the artistic image in a culture of visual information, whereas the department of MA Design focuses on topical forms of engagement from a transdisciplinary attitude. These research trajectories are developed and realized in close collaboration with global and local partners.

DUTCH ARTISTIC RESEARCH EVENT: D.A.R.E # 2, August 31 – September 9.

Together with Casco, Office for Art, Design, and Theory http://www.cascoprojects.org MaHKU initiated during 2006 a series of research activities resulting in an annual manifestation named Dutch Artistic Research Event (DARE). The second edition of this event will take place from September 1-10. Five locations in the city of Utrecht – Expodium, Academiegalerie, Casco, Aorta, Centraal Museum – will not only be platforms for graduate presentations, but will also offer room for research-screenings and parallel panel discussions.

This symposium will look at the role of design/designers with respect to the problems and issue that we face in the world today. In view of these issues, how can we define the role of a designer? Is design able to play a role in solving important (environmental, social, political) problems in the world? Does a designer have to deal with both an artistic and social responsibility, and how can we define that responsibility?

Introductions by Emily Pethick (Director Casco) and Henk Slager (Dean MaHKU). Presentations by Guus Beumer, Petra Blaisse, Hein Eberson, Hella Jongerius, Fiona Raby and Roemer van Toorn. Moderators: Annette W. Balkema, Henk Oosterling and Louise Schouwenberg.
