As an institute of higher learning, we are committed to two traditions: the professional artist’s tradition, which requires mastery of the skills, tools and technologies of the visual arts; and the liberal arts tradition, which requires education in the truest sense, not only imparting facts and ideas, but also fostering critical appraisal of them.

Master of Fine Arts Program

As a studio intensive program, the MFA at Memphis College of Art offers a catalytic environment with the goal of developing artistic practices that contribute significantly to contemporary culture. The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to artmaking in both traditional and new media. During the course of study, students are encouraged to consider the social, cultural, and physical context of their work as central to its interpretation.

Critical seminars and accomplished faculty from a variety of disciplines working in a range of historical, theoretical, and cultural topics contribute significantly to intensive studio work and final thesis presentation. Instruction blends rigorous group critiques with personal and informal interaction between faculty and students. The diversity and frequency of critical discussion strengthens each student’s personal vision and development of articulate responses.

Graduate Studies in Education

New for fall of 2006, this program will prepare artists to work as educators in schools, museums, and community organizations. This field of study combines studio practices with the intellectual and professional experiences necessary for furthering or starting a career as an art educator. Courses can be applied to our Masters of Art in Teaching (MAT) or a Master of Art in Education (MA in Ed).
