The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery was founded in 1969, with the deed of funds by a member of the community, Monica Brewster (nee Govett). The Govett-Brewster is the leading New Zealand contemporary art museum with an international exhibition programme focused on art from the Pacific Rim. The collection of internationally recognised film and kinetic artist Len Lye is held in trust by the Len Lye Foundation at the Gallery.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
– Research and develop exhibitions and related programmes to support the Gallery’s international programme, contracting artists and managing exhibitions from development to installation.
– Support the Director in curatorial tasks associated with exhibitions and related programmes
– Contribute to development of the Gallery’s permanent collection, undertaking acquisition proposals, registration and accessioning tasks using the collection database.
– Maintain relationships with key artists, dealers, critics, sponsors and Gallery supporters to enhance the Gallery’s exhibitions and related programmes
– Undertake original research related to Gallery exhibitions and programmes and contribute copy for publications and promotional material, managing publication projects as required
– Deal with enquiries about the permanent and loan collections
– Prepare and present information to the public and to Gallery audiences as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and training: Advanced degree in art history or fine arts with an emphasis on international contemporary art practice.
Work Experience: Five years experience in curatorial work associated with museum programmes.
Skills and Abilities: Excellent writing skills, collection management skills, project management skills. Demonstrated creativity and innovation in interpretation and presentation of artworks.
