“Art-in-architecture” competition

The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR), Berlin, Germany, announces the following “art-in-architecture” competition for the Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Palace:

Competition task and art location
The Humboldt Forum is creating a unique place of national and international significance in the historical centre of Berlin. The “art in architecture” should make reference to the history of this important site, its future use as an exhibition hall and convention centre, a place of education and science in the context of the Humboldts’ ideas and/or the appearance of a largely reconstructed historical facade with baroque elements, and it should give quality to the mere act of being in the location and have a high level of artistic quality and relevance.

As part of the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace as the Humboldt Forum, “art in architecture” concepts for the two two-storey staircases above portals I and V are planned. The following art forms are possible: wall decorations and hanging installations.

It is expected that the artistic work will be specifically developed for this location and the task described.

Maximum implementation costs (incl. VAT): 150,000 EUR per staircase.

Type of competition
Open two-phase anonymous “art in architecture” competition in German and English. The definitive competition language is German.

Eligibility for participation and procedure
Professional artists and artist groups worldwide are eligible.

The objective of the first phase is to develop conceptual ideas. After the jury has selected up to 20 entries in the first phase, the chosen artists will have the opportunity to further develop their ideas in the second phase of the competition in accordance with the recommendations made by the jury. Each verifiable entry selected for participation in the second phase will receive a fee of 2,000 EUR (incl. VAT).
