Our public programme includes workshops, exhibitions, screenings and seminars, the majority of which are open to the public free of charge. In a moment of political turmoil and geopolitical re-alignment—marked by the rise of various populisms and fascisms—this workshop asks how the claims for exhibition-making as a form of public sphere work now stand. Bringing together perspectives from exhibition-making, exhibition-histories, and curating-as-inquiry, this workshop will explore the changing political imaginaries and “public-ness” of exhibition and of curating’s changing “globalisms”.

Post-independence art institutions in many African countries demonstrate a move from Eurocentric-colonial to decolonial models. What are the organizational strategies originated by artists in post-colonial Africa? Given art’s ambivalent globalization and the wish to institute “alternative” models (self-organisation) outside market-determined and state-sanctioned models, what can we learn from self-organised African contexts? (A Stretched Seminar).

Genocide Memorialisation: Political Imaginaries and Public Materialities
Conference
This is an international conference inviting artists, curators, commissioners, scholars and researchers across the arts, humanities and social sciences to consider the highly specific, but nonetheless pervasive, cultural phenomenon of genocide memorialisation. The conference considers the unsettling intersection of questions of mass murder, historicisation, memory-work, artistic production and public culture at a historical moment marked by a resurgence of xenophobic, ethno-nationalist and racist mobilisations.
The conference is organised by the cross-disciplinary Genocide Memorialisation Seminar, University of Gothenburg, co-convened by the School of Global Studies, Valand Academy, and the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies. Participation in the conference is free, however places are limited, as the intention is to create a focussed space of generative dialogue across a range of practices and disciplines.

Public Art / Public Talk / Public Space
At a time when there is both a wide and energetic experimentation in public art practices, and a renewal of intense debate on the nature and potential of “public-ness” internationally, Valand Academy, in partnership with the Västra Götaland Region, is co-organising a series of seminars to explore the critical agency of art as public culture. These seminars are realised in conjunction with two continuing professional development courses on making, curating and commisisoning art in public delivered in partnership with Public Art Agency Sweden.
The programme will be announced on Thursday, April 27 at a special presentation on—Any Given Sunday (Cape Town)—that includes contributions from Gabrielle Goliath, Riason Naidoo, and Richard Pithouse. For more information on the series and this event go here.
