Post-Doctoral Researcher: History and Political Economy of Cultural Institutions

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland includes nine schools with more than 12,000 students. Post-Doctoral Researcher: History and Political Economy of Cultural Institutions (60%)

Your tasks: You are going to work with a dynamic, practice-based and artistic research team focusing on topics related to media, arts, technology and society at the institute’s Critical Media Lab. The project to which you will be attached investigates the history and modulations of individual-institutional relationships in the arts, in order to model and experiment with the forms, pedagogies and potentials of institutional practices. Specifically, you will conduct historical research on the relationship between artists, creative actors and institutions. Furthermore, you will also help co-organising workshops, conferences as well as other discussion and presentation formats in coordination with / with the support of the project team and colleagues of the Critical Media Lab. The position is limited to 3 years.

Your profile: You can look back on academic training in various branches of the political economics of institutions and/or the sociology of institutions. Furthermore, you have practical experience authoring and leading collaborative peer-reviewed academic publications in English as well as with the preparation of project reports, online texts and digital media. Preferably, you should also have experience analysing and publishing on the history and contemporary dynamics of cultural, artistic, archival and exhibition institutions, organisations and actors. You are comfortable with artistic research contexts and with working in collaborative arts-based research teams. It would be beneficial if you also had experience with teaching practices and workshop formats as well as technical proficiency with web publishing and social media tools. Fluency in written and spoken English and a solid working knowledge of German are mandatory, further language competencies or international experiences are desirable.
