Enrollment is now open for a month-long series of free graduate-level seminars exploring the connections between cultural production and the social processes that characterize our time.

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) announces the second year of its flagship research and education initiative, the Art + Research Center (A+RC). Building upon themes explored during the inaugural season, the 2017–2018 program, entitled Relay Subjectivities, will consider how subjectivity is affected by relaying between different scales—from the global to the everyday—in order to function in and understand the world as it is currently arranged.

Beginning October 2 through 28, the A+RC fall semester 2017 will encompass four weeklong seminars led by field-advancing artists and theorists, including Sam Lewitt, Brian Kuan Wood, Filipa Cesar, and Dr. Simone Browne. The deadline to apply is September 22. ICA members, college students, and national and international artists and cultural producers are encouraged to apply. All seminars will take place at ICA Miami, located at 4040 NE 2nd Ave, Suite 200, Miami. Enrollment is free and applications are available now at

Visiting faculty

Sam Lewitt, October 2–4
Sam Lewitt is an artist based in New York. Selected solo exhibitions include: Swiss Institute, New York (2016), Kunsthalle Basel (2016) and The Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco (2015). With Richard Birkett, he co-organized the exhibition and Materials and Money and Crisis at MUMOK, Vienna (2013). His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions including the 57th Venice Biennale (2017), A Slow Succession with Many Interruptions, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2016), Nature after Nature at Fridericianum, Kassel (2014), and the Whitney Biennial (2012). His writing has appeared in publications such as Artforum, Collapse, CURA, Kunstforum International, October and Texte zur Kunst.

Brian Kuan Wood, October 10–11
Brian Kuan Wood is a writer based in New York. He is an editor of e-flux journal and teaches at the Masters in Curatorial Practice program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. His writings have been included in numerous catalogues and publications.

Filipa Cesar, October 16–18
Filipa Cesar is an artist and filmmaker interested in the fictional aspects of the documentary, the porous borders between cinema and its reception, and the politics and poetics inherent to moving image. Since 2011, she has been looking into the origins of the cinema of the African Liberation Movement in Guinea Bissau as a laboratory of resistance to ruling epistemologies. César premiered her first feature-length essay-film Spell Reel at the Forum section of the 67th Berlinale, 2017. Selected exhibitions and screenings have taken place at the 29th São Paulo Biennial, 2010; Manifesta 8, Cartagena, 2010; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, 2011–15; Jeu de Paume, Paris, 2012; Kunstwerke, Berlin, 2013; SAAVY Contemporary, Berlin 2014–15; Tensta konsthall, Spånga, 2015; Mumok, Vienna, 2016; Contour 8 Biennial, Mechelen and Gasworks, London, 2017.

Dr. Simone Browne, October 26–27
Dr. Simone Browne is black diaspora studies and surveillance studies scholar who is currently an associate professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora studies the University of Texas at Austin. Her topics of research and teaching include surveillance, biometrics, airport security, social media, black diaspora and virtual worlds. Her most recent book is Dark Matters: On the Surveillance of Blackness (Duke University Press, 2015). She is an Executive Board member of HASTAC. She is also a member of Deep Lab, a feminist collaborative composed of artists, engineers, hackers, writers, and theorists. Along with Katherine McKittrick and Deborah Cowen, she is co-editor of Errantries, a new series published by Duke University Press.
