Exhibitions & programs 2017–18

The Pollock Gallery at SMU Meadows School of the Arts is pleased to present five exhibitions for its 2017–18 season, with three of the exhibitions curated by Laura A. L. Wellen, Jeffrey Ian Rosen + Misako Rosen, and Guillermo León Gómez. The gallery will also host its annual MFA and BFA qualifying exhibitions featuring works in a wide-ranging variety of styles and mediums.

Screening of The Forgotten Space by Allan Sekula and Noel Burch: Saturday, November 4, 7pm at The Power Station, 3816 Commerce St., Dallas, Texas 75226.

Co-curated by Pollock Gallery Director Sofia Bastidas and urban theorist Guillermo León Gómez as part of the ongoing research of Port to Port, WIDE OPEN explores the historic precedents and free market visions established in past centuries that have helped form today’s landscape in Dallas. The exhibit is a multimedia installation with completed video works and essays from Texas and international artists and writers in conversation with historical documents from SMU DeGolyer Library archives about the Port of Dallas. This research exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with essays by Peter Fend, Heather Davis, Laray Polk and Guillermo León Gómez.

Let’s See Action

Let’s See Action presents an entry point to understanding a contemporary Japanese aesthetic and its history via the presentation of contemporary artists engaged in playful experimentation with the very notion of such an aesthetic. Curated by MISAKO & ROSEN, Tokyo (Jeffrey Ian Rosen + Misako Rosen).

Participating artists: Shimon Minamikawa and Ei Arakawa; with Richard Aldrich, Chim↑Pom, XYZ Collective (presenting: COBRA, Soshiro Matsubara, Futoshi Miyagi, Maki Katayama), Tobias Madison & Matthew Lutz-Kinoy.

About the Pollock Gallery
The Pollock Gallery plays a significant and valuable academic role in SMU’s learning environment. A university art gallery is by its nature a logical extension of the studio classroom and provides a place for the thoughtful and scholarly presentation and consideration of present and past artists and art forms. Historically the proper vehicle for the study and examination of art, the gallery provides an arena for making connections critical to the educational process.

Over the years, exhibitions organized and curated by the gallery have provided students, faculty, staff and the general public with opportunities to experience a well-considered and wide array of works of art from different artists, time periods and cultures. Sharing this resource with other academic institutions is achieved through the scholarly production of publications, gallery talks and symposia.

Exhibits are free and open to the public. Hours: Tuesday through Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 1 to 5pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.
