PNCA’s Low-Residency MFA in Visual Studies is organized as a hybrid of an MFA degree and an artist residency.  Immersive intensives twice yearly plus year-around guided research give students time to develop work, and build context while sharpening critical, formal, and intellectual tools. The low-residency program’s longer degree-completion times (3 years), flexible schedule, intensive residency periods, and mentorship program make it suitable for students who are working artists or already engaged professionally. Furthermore, the program is interdisciplinary, offering artists of all media and stages of their development the opportunity to develop their work.

Students gather on-campus each year for a nine-week intensive program (eight weeks in the summer and one week in the winter) that includes graduate seminars, critiques, studio visits, visiting artists’ lectures, and intensive periods of studio practice. An important component of the program is the visiting faculty. Highly respected, international artists, curators and critics are selected to teach, conduct studio visits, and present lectures at PNCA during residency periods. The Low-Residency MFA is engaged locally, nationally, and internationally.

The visiting faculty for 2018 are:
Sondra Perry, Claire Fontaine, Suhail Malik, OEI, John Riepenhoff, PDP: Natalia Zuluaga and Patricia Margarita Hernandez, Alexandria Eregbu, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Dorothée Dupuis, and manuel arturo abreu.

Throughout the year, students work with an off-site mentor to guide their progress. While on campus, students have their own studio and access to world-class facilities: including newly built print making studios, library, photography lab, fabrication lab, woodworking studios and sound/video labs, as well as faculty and technicians who can guide students through technical and conceptual challenges. With fewer students on campus during the Low Residency intensives students have easier access to the facilities and access to faculty for individual attention.

Merit scholarships are available for all accepted students. Other scholarships available include the International Studio Fellowship.

Interested students must apply to the Master of Fine Arts program online, February 1 2018 is the priority application deadline.
