The Daniel & Florence Guerlain Foundation has announced the names of the three selected artists for the 2018 prize on December 14 at the Beaux-Arts of Paris.
An exhibition of the three artists will be shown in Paris at the Salon du Dessin from the 21 to the 26 of March 2018 in the Palais Brongniart. The winner will be announced on March 22.
Members of the 2018 jury are: Charles Asprey (United Kingdom), Patrice Boissonnas (France), Florence and Daniel Guerlain (France), Laure Kaltenbach (France), Dominique Levy (France), Barbara and Gaetano Maccaferri (Italy), Laurent Mueller (Germany), Stephen Reily (United States).
Mamma Andersson
Born in 1962 in Lulea, Sweden, lives and works in Stockholm
Represented by the galleries: Magnus Karlsson (Stockholm), Victoria Miro (London), Stephen Friedman (London), David Zwirner (New York).
Mamma Andersson plays with the theatre and film world, inspired by a host of images from art history or the press, then reworked in the manner of storyboards. She picks out numerous photos of landscapes or interior scenes which make reference to the history of Nordic painting. Extract from a text by Marie Maertens.

Leiko Ikemura
Born in 1951 in Tsu (Japan), lives and works between Cologne and Berlin
Represented by the galleries: Karsten Grève (Paris) and Michael Fuchs (Berlin)
Her forms appear soft and hazy. But, the work Leiko Ikemura produces is far more deeply committed, delicately revealing her attitude towards feminism and global ecological or political concerns. Always striving to use simple artistic means, a limited palette or quasi-artisanal materials, she quietly decries the injustice of ecological catastrophe. Extract of a text by Marie Maertens.
Her work has been shown in many institutions such as Kunstmuseum of Ahrenshoop and the Nevada Museum of Art. It belongs to collections in the Centre Pompidou, the Kunstmuseum of Basel, Zurich and Berne, the Modern Art Museum, Tokyo and the Florence and Daniel Guerlain collection.
Juul Kraijer
Born in 1970 in Assen, Netherlands, lives and works in Rotterdam
Represented by the galleries: Akinci (Amsterdam), Monica De Cardenas (Milan), Vadehra Art Gallery (New Delhi)
The themes of human faces and bodies emerged as soon as Juul Kraijer began drawing. Mostly executed in charcoal or pencil on white or coloured paper, the human body is shown in all its spiritual and intellectual dimensions. Her work belongs to the collections in the Centre Pompidou, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the drawing collections of Florence and Daniel Guerlain (Paris), the MoMA (New York) and the Museum Moderner Kunst (Vienna).
About the Prize
The Drawing prize is reserved for French and foreign artists, whether they live in France or not, but who sustain a privileged cultural link with France, and for whom drawing constitutes a significant part of their work.
Created in 2007, it honours artists who make any unique work on paper, using graphic means: crayon, charcoal, red chalk, ink, wash tint, gouache, watercolour, pastels and felt… including collages and wall drawings, but excluding computer and mechanical processes.
The three candidates are selected by a committee composed of the two founders, Daniel and Florence Guerlain and of four members. The jury of collectors responsible for choosing the winner changes for each edition.
The Prize’s endowment is 25,000 EUR: 15,000 EUR for the winner and 5,000 euros for each of the two other artists. A work by the winner is offered to a French institution by the Foundation.
The award receives the support of Neuflize OBC, Guerlain, Axa Art, Artcurial, Finances Consultants, Voisin Consulting Life Sciences, the Foundation’s Cercle des Amis.
