In Pulso [Pulse], her seventh solo show at Galeria Vermelho, Lia Chaia reflects on the human body from two viewpoints: the situation of the body in relation to pressures from society, and the gradual distancing in the relation between humanity and nature. The artist focuses on the specificities of the human organism as a sign of vitality, emphasizing the body’s pulsing aspect.
Lia Chaia started producing in the late 1990s and has since developed a body of works through constant experimentation in a wide range of media—including performances, video, photography and installations—maintaining a continuous dialogue between the human body and its relation to its surroundings, especially the city. In Chaia’s work, the body and the city—the natural and the constructed—live in a clashing and merging relation. This amalgam is sometimes serene, sometimes turbulent.
Galeria Vermelho is also presenting a selection of 18 video works by Lia Chaia in chronological order in its projection room, Sala Antonio.
Chaia’s use of this media refers to the beginning of video art in Brazil between the late 1960s and early 1970s, when access to portable cameras began with the Portapak cameras that were brought illegally from abroad during the then military dictatorship. The portability introduced by the Portapak allowed for recordings to be made outside of studios permitting more experimentation. The cameras allowed for the recording of contestation performance videos filmed in private situations within a context ruled by oppressive censoring.
Lia Chaia’s camera also records experiments the artist carries out with the body. She shoots her scenes with predominantly static and/or sequential takes that reinforce the lived experience as the main content of the works. Body and surroundings are translated into nature and construction, the primitive and the engineered—an opposition present in her own artistic practice, in a confrontation between the artist and the recording device.
