miart 2018′s Artistic Director Alessandro Rabottini announces a new team of curators and professionals, new members of the Selection Committee and a project confirming the fair’s role as a leader in Italy and a fresh addition to the international calendar. Once again, miart is the catalyst for an intense programme of special events and openings thanks to its collaboration with the major public and private institutions in the city. The Milano Art Week, organized in conjunction with the Municipality of Milan, will gather together established exhibition spaces such as Pirelli HangarBicocca, Fondazione Prada, Triennale, Fondazione Trussardi, Palazzo Reale, Museo del Novecento, FAI, Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Galleria d’Arte Moderna, FM Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea, Fondazione Furla, and Fondazione Carriero, only to name a few.
miart is a fair that brings together modern and contemporary art and limited edition design, creating dialogue between post-war masters and emerging talents. Through its main sections—Established Contemporary, Established Masters, and Emergent—miart aims at presenting to its audience a broad chronological offering, from the art of the beginning of the last century to works of the most recent generations, through a carefully selected range of galleries operating in both primary and secondary markets.
Together with a strong selection of international contemporary art galleries, a particular emphasis is put on historical works within the sections Masters and Decades. Both are curated by Alberto Salvadori and create dialogue between seminal pieces by post-war masters with artistic positions still to be discovered.
The dialogue between artists from different historical backgrounds and more contemporary positions takes the central stage at miart via the special section Generations, this year curated by renowned international curators Lorenzo Benedetti (Curator of Contemporary Art at the Kunstmuseum in St. Gallen) and Jens Hoffmann (Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at the Jewish Museum in New York).
London based independent curator Attilia Fattori Franchini will be in charge of coordinating the 20 international young galleries that each year form the section Emergent, a fresh selection of the most recent experimentations from emerging artists represented by galleries with less than 5 years of activity.
miart 2018 will also see new challenging projects brought by the section On Demand, a cross-cutting section showcasing context-based art: site-specific works such as installations and wall paintings, projects to be executed, commissions, performances and so on; works for which the audience and the collector play an active role. On Demand is curated by Oda Albera in her role of Exhibitors Liaison and Special Projects Curator.
Contemporary limited edition design objects and important pieces of modern furniture and decorative arts are at the core of Object. This section showcases a carefully selected number of international design galleries in the context of modern and contemporary art. This year it is curated by design critic and journalist Hugo Macdonald.
An ambitious program of conversations and roundtables brings more than forty international artists, museum directors, curators, thinkers and collectors to Milan each year. For the third consecutive year this rich series of talks will be realized in collaboration with In Between Art Film, the production house of artists’ films and experimental works founded by Beatrice Bulgari. Curators of the miartalks 2018 are João Ribas (Deputy Director and Senior Curator at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto) and Fatos Üstek, independent curator, London.
miart 2018 confirms its numerous acquisition funds and prizes that each year six international juries award to galleries and works presented at the fair:
Fondazione Fiera Milano Acquisition Fund “Giampiero Cantoni”
Herno Prize assigned to the booth with the best concept and design
Fidenza Village Prize awarded to the best dialogue within the section Generations
