In the context of Leipzig’s Spinnerei Winter Gallery Tour, Art Mûr is pleased to open its 2017 programming with the first solo exhibition of Laurent Lamarche in Europe. For the past ten years, the Montreal-based artist has been investigating ideas and images that question our relationship to nature and current technologies. His practice includes photography, sculpture and installation and explores the porous boundaries between nature and artifice via an aesthetic that evokes both microcosmic and macrocosmic worlds.

In ATLAB, Laurent Lamarche’s works displayed in bell jars have a distinct ambience recalling cyber-hybrid developments. Others, amoeba-like structures threaded through with mechanical skeleton appear as nu-cryptophyte algae, all done from the vantage-point of a microscopic lens peering into a petri dish. Lamarche’s objects strike a scientific chord in contrast to an art world overwrought with digital spectacles and ominous critique. His work bares a rigorous formalism imbued with indexes towards the ever difficult area of art and technology.
The bio-technological force at work in these objects bears significance in the infrastructure surrounding their content. Collectively Lamarche’s works indicates to us that it has become necessary to read into objects as indexes of wider cultural and cognitive processes within newly emerging paradigms of a technologically complex world. In discussing these pieces as objects there can be a reinterpretation of radical technologies that separate humans and machines that realises that agency is not a property of an entity, but produced through objects that generate discursive practices.

About Art Mûr
Established in 1996, Art Mûr has evolved into one of the largest private contemporary art galleries in Canada. The gallery represents both emerging and established artists with practices ranging from painting and sculpture to new media and performance art. Well-known for its dynamic programming, which includes both solo and thematic group exhibitions, Art Mûr plays an important role in the diffusion of contemporary art in Montreal and since September 2016, in Leipzig. It is a cultural hot spot where collectors, curators, artists and clients coalesce. Art Mûr represents over 30 artists collected by numerous museums throughout North America and Europe and who have participated to significant events such as Venice Biennale, the Prague Biennial and the Sharjah Biennial and have won prizes as prestigious as the Sobey Art Award, the General Governor’s award, the Borduas Prize and many others. Art Mûr also initiates regular collaborations with young independent curators, curators and directors of museums.
