Brazil’s leading art fair, SP-Arte, launches new design sector for its 12th edition. The section highlights Brazil’s long history of design and presents an opportunity to recognize the importance of local production, while also opening a forum of discussion, presentation, and visibility on an international platform.
The spirit of Brazilian design is characterized by the local landscape, which boasts an abundance of wood and natural resources. Early designs from the colonial period are distinguished by skillful woodwork. Today, contemporary designers continue to employ wood, upholding the tradition of woodwork, while also bringing attention to the preservation of the environment.
Exhibitors in Design will focus on the individuality of authorial design and its evolution over time in furniture, lighting, and antiques. The galleries will present colonial, modern, and contemporary pieces that have contributed to the consolidation and sophistication recognized in Brazilian design today.
Visitors will be able to acquaint themselves with the contemporary landscape including the experimental designs of Luciana Martins (b. 1967) and Gerson de Oliveira (b. 1970) from OVO. ETEL will present a new collection with refined furnishings by Claudia Moreira Salles (b.1955), and, with the support of Lasar Segall Museum, a re-edition of furniture pieces designed by modernist artist Lasar Segall (1891-1957), in 1932.
The internationally renowned Campana Brothers, Humberto (b.1953) and Fernando Campana (b. 1961) will be presenting their latest collection, Cangaço at the gallery Firma Casa, a collection inspired by outlaws turned folk heroes that roamed the country’s Northeast in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The sector will also encompass pieces from the 19th century, including traditional furniture of rosewood and straw available at the antiquary Itamar Musse.
In the mid 20th century, Brazilian design entered the international arena with the rise of modernism and the works of famous designers Sergio Rodrigues (1927–2014), Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012), Jorge Zalszupin (b. 1922), Lina Bo Bardi (1914–92) and Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–92). Vintage and rare works by these modernist masters will be available at Legado Arte and Artemobilia. Re-editions by these designers will also be available at ETEL, who represents the estate of Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, Jorge Zalszupin, and Gregori Warchavchik, among many others.
Gallery DPOT will also be bringing two individual exhibitions: one will be by the multidisciplinary artist, Geraldo de Barros (1923–98), a pioneer in Brazilian design; and the second will be by the up and coming designer, Jader Almeida (b.1981). Mercado Moderno will exhibit a special edition by Zanini de Zanine (b. 1978), Banco 15, which honors the 15 year anniversary of his father’s death, Jose Zanine Caldas (1919–2001), a wood master and a reference in Brazilian modern furnishings and architecture.
Other prominent contemporary works also include the delicate wood furnishings of Carlos Motta, which incorporates ecological issues in his creations, as well as the organic forms of Hugo França‘s (b.1954) internationally recognized chairs, tables, and sculptures in Pequi Wood. França’s philosophy of “minimum intervention” results in colossal works produced from salvaged trees from the Brazilian rainforest. His works are present in many collections, including the outdoor museum and botanical garden, Inhotim.
Other leading designers partipating in the sector are the delicate and playful geometric forms of José Marton and glass pieces by Jacqueline Terpins.
